More on Stan Fischer:
(1) An MIT professor who advised an all-star crew of grad students including
Bernanke, Mario Draghi, and Greg Mankiw, (2) #2 official as IMF, (3) contained
the Asian economic crisis of 1998, (3) vice chairman at Citigroup, (4)
basically single-handedly brought Israel’s economy back on track. He could be
the U.S.’s next Fed chairman.
For years, Fischer was known as the adult in Israeli
government, the man who could be counted on to keep the economy on track even
as politicians in parliament squabbled. Obama could well decide that the United
States is in need of just such a figure.
What the Economist
thinks business can learn from armed forces: (1) installment of corporate
culture pales in comparison to the military counterpart; (2) in terms of urging
people to be cheerful in all circumstances; (3) how to train new people and
learn from experience. [Note: whoever thinks military strategy, leadership, and
training has no value in business today, needs to have their head examined]…Source:

India’s rice
revolution: world record amount with no GM and no herbicide (22.4 tonnes /
hectar). The key there is via System of Rice (or root) Intensification (SRI):
instead of planting 3-week-old rice seedlings in clumps of 3 or 4 in
waterlogged fields, the farmers carefully nurture ½ as many seeds, then
transplant the young plants into fields one by one when much younger. [Note:
funny thing is, it’s been around for a while]…Source: http://www.guardian.co.uk/global-development/2013/feb/16/india-rice-farmers-revolution?CMP=twt_gu
Top 10 emerging
technologies for 2013: (1) OnLine Electric Vehicles, undergoing road tests
in Seoul, (2) 3-D printing with all the hype, (3) self-healing materials
without human intervention; (4) energy-efficient water purification, (5) CO2
conversion and use. [Note: self-healing materials sounds incredibly cool, Autonomic
Materials (non-public) is on the forefront of this field]…Source: http://forumblog.org/2013/02/top-10-emerging-technologies-for-2013/
Why beef is becoming
more like chicken: Originally developed to treat asthma in humans, Zilmax is
a highly effective growth drug that took the industry by storm. The drug changes
the animals’ metabolism so they produce more muscle instead of fat. Yes, more
meat, but it also removes the very qualities that people like about beef, like
the fatty marbling that adds juiciness and flavor. [Note: The trend is
irreversible—most people don’t have sensitive pallets and will love to eat a
steak every day. Merck makes the drug, by the way]…Source: http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/food/2013/02/zilmax_the_cattle_growth_drug_that_s_making_beef_more_like_chicken.2.html
