Oddly Relevant Mar-26-2013

YC winter 2013 demo day: Five startups to watch: (1) Airware, a platform for drone software that allows customers to manage small aircraft; (2) SimplyInsured, a Kayak/Hipmunk-like service for small business owners to pick different insurance plans; (3) Bitnami, app store for server software in corporations; (4) Microyza, a crowdsourcing platform that allows individuals to contribute money toward scientific research; (5) Watsi, a non-profit platform where individuals can crowdfund medical treatment and surgeries for individuals. A Country Is Not a Company: Author’s logic: (1) technically almost all country would be insolvent if it was asked to pay all its debt using available assets; (2) debt is essentially securitized by tax cash-flows; (3) you can’t repossess a country. [Note: some good points but not necessary a sound and coherent argument, would anyone care to share a good reference on this topic?]…Source: http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2013/03/remember_a_country_is_not_a_co.html

The power of an open system (quote): “The curated business, then, will ultimately fail because it keeps missing this shoulder, this untapped group of talented, eager, hard-working people shut out by their deliberately closed ecosystem. Over time, the open systems use their embrace of waste to winnow out the masses and end up with a new elite, a self-selected group who demonstrate their talent and hard work and genius over time, not in an audition.”[Note: but the higher the complexity, perhaps the more closed the better?]…Source: http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2013/03/most-people-most-of-the-time-the-crowd-fallacy.html
